Miscellaneous

A background in fine art has given Paul a passion for numerous miscellaneous visual art projects, from painting to jewelry, craft making and sculpture. His always colourful, whimsical, Toronto-based jewelry business Paul’s Trinkets features both his handmade gold, silver and beaded jewelry. Also featured is his miscellaneous vintage accessories collected from years of researched thrift shopping. Adornment for Paul is synonymous with celebration and self determination. Alongside a deep love for accessories, Paul also is profoundly interested in visual art from around the world. As an exhibited artist himself, Paul is inspired in his work by colourful depictions of nature and multi media experimentation. His secondary education included classical training in drawing and painting, studying worldly techniques and theories of art. Outside of traditional art, Paul has also made portfolio worth of pieces with soapstone, recycled plastic, textiles, clay, lithography and other tactile mediums.

Sunglasses Display (3D Model and Functional case)

Medium: Laser cutting, 3D printing, Industrial assembly

Following a Fusion 360 model display case for sunglasses I designed, I laser cut, 3D printed and assembled a display case that moves away from typical stacked sunglasses displays, experimenting with rotation and interactivity in appliances. Made 2023. See Fusion360 Render.

Trash Fish

Medium: Plastic, aluminium, fabric, acrylic paint, hot glue, recycled materials on canvas

An underwater seascape using miscellaneous trash items like aluminum cans, fabric and plastic, reflecting how today’s oceans have more human waste than ocean life. 72 by 36 inches, made 2022. For process work see Sketchbook.

Melancholy Hills

Medium: Acrylic on wooden board

A dream-like painting depicting joy in the natural world. Oftentimes as someone who lives in a city, it can be hard to remember feelings of serenity in nature, and this highly saturated landscape represents the blurred memory of rural life. 4 by 4 feet, made 2022.

To the Fallen (series)

Medium: Plexiglass Intaglio Prints

Combining Russian imagery and Japanese motifs to create a simplistic image of abandoned nesting dolls. The English text reads ‘Lest we forget’, Russian translates to ‘Everlasting Memory’ and Japanese translates to ‘Prayer for peace’ – each a saying to mourn those who fought in past wars. Approx. 11 by 8.5 inches each, made 2022.

BOX1

Medium: Pencils and inks

Part of my BOX series, BOX1 is an architectural drawing depicting the incorporation of flora in an urban environment. 25 by 19 inches, made 2021. For process work see my Sketchbook.

Vintage Nike Blazer (Final Poster and Illustration)

Medium: Digital Illustration

A poster that touches on themes of city life, while paying tribute to the NBA and Nike. Won 3rd place at the OCADU and MARTK’D Sneaker Poster Competition. 24 by 36 inches (for print), made 2021. For process work see my Sketchbook.

The Gasp (from three perspectives)

Medium: Sculpted from Soapstone

Sculpted figure with exaggerated features, complemented by surrounding negative space with the hole in the middle. Inspired by ‘Journey To The Great Woman’ By David Ruben Piqtoukun, displayed in the AGO. 12 x 6 x 14 centimetres (L by W by H), made in 2021.

The Youthful Triad

Medium: Drawing, Digital Illustration

I interpreted an art prompt ‘youth’ by drawing three characters and editing them together into a collage. The person with a pickaxe represents breaking, the person with the crow represents judgement and the one with candy represents strangeness. 2000 by 3000 pixels, made 2021.

A fight against the straight agenda (series)

Medium: Digital Illustration

Portraits in this series feature 2SLGBTQ+ activists, positioned in the ‘Uncle Sam’ pose, with a caption that’s a play on the ‘I want you’ poster by James Montgomery Flagg. I used American imagery and pop art styles to convey the significance of queer Americans. 1854 x 1378 pixels, made 2021.
